This is a letter from Peter Davies who reportedly "retired" from the RSPCA and now seems to be Director General of the WSPA :-)

Ban this export of live farm animals Concerns mount over continued mortalities on "ship of death".

The continuing saga of over 50,000 sheep that have been suffering at sea for the last eight weeks is a graphic illustration of why the long distance transportation of millions of animals for slaughter each year should be ended on welfare grounds.

Since leaving Australia on what was supposed to have been a 16-day journey to Saudi Arabia at the start of August, the sheep remain confined on a transport ship, the MV Cormo Express, with no immediate prospect of being disembarked.

To date, over 4,300 of these animals have perished in sweltering hot and humid conditions that have reached more than 40C at times. Unless authorities act now, the death toll is set to rise further. Originally destined for slaughter in Saudi Arabia, the animals were turned away from Jeddah due to alleged health problems.

Since then, the ship has been repeatedly turned away from destinations in the Middle East. It is currently in the Arabian Sea with no immediate prospect of being allowed to dock. The World Society for the Protection of Animals believes farm animals should be slaughtered as near as possible to the point of production. The meat can then be transported without incurring the heavy price in suffering that is inherent in the long distance trade in live animals. WSPA is calling on the Australian government to end its live export trade. Major General, Peter Davies CB WSPA Director General

Before tackling issues in OTHER countries why doesn't Peter Davies tackle the reason for the above trauma in THIS country.

The reason the sheep are transported in such horrendous conditions is because there is such a demand for "hot blood" meat...so I understand.

This is also a bone of contention here, in this country, where the barbaric Halal slaughter takes place on a regular basis. I also understand that there is a new Halal fast food outlet in either Birmingham or London.

Why not read the other articles and see what Peter Davies says about the hunting debate. Ask whether he has attended any of the functions of the hunts in Wales. Whether his wife rides/rode to hounds. Double standards wouldn't you say?

What does he say about the RSPCA's Freedom Food and see what Nicky Campbell has to say in his interview with Peter Davies

WE support the PDSA who as far as we know have no baggage in the shape of the atrocities committed by the RSPCA.
