Officers 'colluded' to save police dog

POLICE officers colluded and gave false evidence in an attempt to save a police dog who attacked a man in the street, a court heard yesterday. Laurie Agar, 35, told jurors at Teesside county court that he had been mauled by the dog before being sprayed with CS gas and beaten.

He had been walking home from his local pub with his girlfriend, Maxine Percy, in Middlesbrough. Their sons, Carl, nine, and Thomas, two, were watching from the doorstep. Mr Agar, a telephone engineer, claimed that several police officers arrived to deal with a disturbance at the pub. As one approached him, Bosco, a six-year-old German Shepherd, leapt forward and bit his right leg.

He told the jury that he grabbed the dog by the collar and turned to hand him to the officer. As he did, he was sprayed with CS gas and other officers attacked him.

Mr Agar said he was then hit on the back of the neck and fell to the ground before being handcuffed as the dog continued to savage him.

He and Miss Percy were charged with being drunk and disorderly and assaulting police. At the magistrates' court, Mr Agar was accused of hitting Pc Mark Robson, Bosco's handler.

The charges were thrown out. Mr Agar and Miss Percy are suing Cleveland Police for assault, false imprisonment and malicious prosecution following the incident on Dec 26, 1997.

Jamie Hill, prosecuting, claimed that police had given false statements to protect themselves and Bosco. Mr Agar required hospital treatment for several months to the numerous wounds to his legs, the court heard.
