A FAILED asylum seeker who left. 12-year-old Amy Houston to die after a hit-and-run crash has been jailed for just four months.

The sentence triggered fury amongst Amy's family.

The girl's father Paul had to be restrained by police after magistrates announced the sentence

. "He's laughing at the justice system and he is laughing at every decent person m this country," said Mr Houston yesterday "He will be back on the streets in two months while we face a life sentence."

The family said the British legal system had "failed our precious girl" Ibrahim, 25, fled after Amy ran in front of his car and was - knocked down.

The youngster, who was trapped under Ibrahim's black flovei; was freed by firefighters but she died in hospital.

Ibrahim lost a two-and-a-half year battle against deportation in November last year, but was allowed to stay temporarily in Britain because of volatility in Iraq.

Amy's grandmother Margaret Houston said: "He left that little girl to die and he is a coward who has no honour. He ran off to save his own skin, leaving Amy trapped under his car."

Ibrahim, who was banned for a string of motoring convictions, "panicked" after Amy ran in front of the car in Blackburn, Lancashire, and was knocked down.

Prosecutor John Wood told Blackburn magistrates: "On the day of the offence he was fully aware that he should not have been on the road.

It obviously follows that had he not been on the road this tragic accident would I not have happened."

Ibrahim, from Blackburn, telephoned an ex-girlfriend who took him to a police station where he admitted everything, the court heard.

The magistrates, who could only impose a maximum six-month jail term, gave him credit for an early guilty plea.

"I couldn't have wished for a better daughter, I was so proud of her," he said. "She was a beautiful little girl, kind natured, quiet, funny she was everything a parent could ask and I doted on her. She never asked for anything, she was happy with whatever she got." Mr Houston added: "The police have been brilliant in the support they have given us and I can understand why they get frustrated with the legal system when something like this happens."

Michael Blacklidge, defending, said: "He wishes he could turn the clock back, but for me to say any more would only add to the pain and hurt that people already feeL" //cutting ends
